What is a Dental Implant?
While dental implants come in many types, the most commonly placed are in the shape of a post that replaces the root of a tooth. These “posts” are usually made of titanium or titanium alloy, a metal that can be thought of as fusing to the bone surrounding it. A replacement tooth is then fixed to the post. Implants can be used to replace a single tooth, or entire arches of teeth. The tooth can be either permanently attached or removable. Often, you can improve the stability of your existing denture in just a few visits.
How do implants compare with partial or full dentures?
- Dentures are not fixed to the bone, and can therefore be unstable
- Dentures can make it difficult to eat or smile with confidence
- Partial Dentures rely on other teeth for support, which can have a negative affect on those teeth
- Implants can feel like normal teeth
- Implants can have a stronger biting force
- Implants can look more natural
